style of a 16th century french chateau (now administered by the national trust), waddesdon has been largely an estate village since the late 19th century. the village today has a population of around 2,000 (2001 census) and is still dominated by buildings constructed by the rothschild family (the five arrows hotel, the village hall, and houses built for manor employees. the parish (together with westcott, woodham, eythrope and wormstone) covers an area of 7,252 acres. at one time connected with nearby aylesbury via train, waddesdon railway station is now closed and the village can only be reached by road (a41). waddesdon history – a brief history of waddesdon: certainly a saxon settlement before the norman conquest, waddesdon manor was held by one of queen edith’s men – brictric, in those early, mostly undocumented days. in the domesday book of 1086 the manor was recorded as being held my miles crispin and valued at 27 hides. later waddesdon manor was granted to henry of oxford and later passed into the courtenay family, one of whom became earl of devon (hugh) in 1335. the manor was forfeited to the crown by the courtenay family after thomas earl of devon was beheaded as a baron ferdinand de rothschild, a politician (he was high sheriff of buckinghamshire and liberal mp for aylesbury), art collector and member of the wealthy rothschild banking family of austria. baron ferdinand de rothschild proceeded to build the striking waddesdon manor house, on a design by gabrielle-hippolyte destailleur, in the renaissance style of a 16th century french chateau, wine cellars and all. ferdinand died in 1898, his estate passing to his sister, alice charlotte de rothschild. the construction of waddesdon’s parish church st michael and all angels was began in 1190, it was extended and embellished many times over the centuries, especially during the medieval and victorian perods. the font dates from about 1400, the church tower was rebuilt in 1892, replacing the one built during the 14th century. waddesdon over the ages has been a mostly agricultural village, it has has the names votesdone (11th century) and woddesdon (14th century), as well as the current spelling of the name. during the 18th century it briefly delved into silk making, with a small factory being established in 1843 as an offshoot of a larger factory in nearby aylesbury. pillow lace making was also carried out by many of the women of the parish during the mid to late 19th century. the railway (metropolitan and great central) arrived in the village in the late 19th century with its railway station opening on 1st january 1897 (as waddesdon manor station), connecting it with aylesbury and verney junction. a further station called waddesdon road was on a different line called the brill tramway. waddesdon (it later dropped the manor) station closed on 5th july 1936, after the metropolitan railway was absorbed into the london passenger transport board. waddesdon village hall
